Corporate Social Responsibility

At Bridgeport Hospital, we believe that caring for the community means being an active part of it... and at every level of our organization, we're committed to going the extra mile for the people we serve and care for. As one of the area's most visible employers and sources of economic stability, the people of Bridgeport Hospital provide tremendous levels of charity care to the city of Bridgeport and beyond. From our extensive, hands-on community services to our united dedication to helping our neighbors build a better tomorrow, we are proud to be looked to and relied upon for any support we can afford the region.

Caring for the Community

Bridgeport is the most populous city in Connecticut, and the fifth-largest city in New England. It is also one of the poorest, with more than 18% of the population living below the poverty level. Bridgeport Hospital, however, is determined to ensure that an inability to pay is never a barrier to world-class medical care. Our longstanding commitment to serving the needs of the uninsured and underinsured has established us as one of New England's leading providers of free and charity care, and has led to the development of such innovative programs as:

  • The Bridgeport Hospital Primary Care Center, which provides Medical/Surgical, Pediatric and OB/GYN care to the underserved as well as access to a wide range of subspecialty clinics.

  • We are also partnered with two Bridgeport-based Federally Qualified Healthcare Centers, providing additional community-based primary care services.

  • Our Community Prescription Assistance Program assists uninsured and underinsured patients in obtaining expensive prescription medicine and therapies.

  • Our Lead Safe Program provides a temporary residence for children undergoing treatment for lead poisoning and their families.

  • Through the Norma F. Pfriem Breast Care Center, we provide mammography screenings, breast cancer education and support programs for uninsured women in the community.

  • Our Child FIRST program is an early childhood mental health initiative that identifies at-risk children and arranges appropriate intervention and support.

  • We offer a community-based Nurturing Connections Parenting Program for first-time parents.

  • Through the Bridgeport Hospital Center for Geriatrics, we provide an extensive range of services including home visits to thousands of area elderly every year.

In addition, Bridgeport Hospital also offers many support groups to individuals and families in the community, providing them with a sense of shared experience as well as valuable information and resources to help them through their challenges.

Partnerships for the Common Good

As an expression of our commitment to supporting local communities, Bridgeport Hospital has created partnerships with many organizations to promote physical, emotional and economic well-being, including:
  • AARP (senior driving safety courses)

  • The American Heart Association, including employee participation in the annual regional American Heart Walk

  • The Arthritis Association

  • The March of Dimes

  • American Red Cross blood drives

  • Co-chair and employee participation in the Southern Regional Sickle Cell Association Walkathon

  • The Seaview Avenue Business Alliance, a group of local businesses dedicated to cleaning up and rebuilding the Seaview Avenue corridor of Bridgeport

  • The Neighborhood Revitalization Zone planning committees, an important part of an ongoing, city-wide urban renewal effort

  • And more than 500 area businesses through their relationship with Business Health Services.

Bridgeport Hospital plays an active role in the Yale New Haven Health System Office of Emergency Preparedness, a national leader in emergency preparedness and response initiatives. Our facility serves as the site for testing and exercises related to bioterrorism, pandemic flu outbreak, regional evacuation and other key areas.

Building for the Future Through Education

  • Bridgeport Hospital also leads an Allied Health program at Harding High School in Bridgeport, an inner city school populated largely by underserved students. This program exposes students to career opportunities in the health care field, and provides guidance and leadership toward that end.

  • The Bridgeport Hospital School of Nursing workins to address the national nursing shortage by offering accelerated 18-month and 2-year RN diploma programs, and offers many full-cost scholarships to enable and encourage students to enter this professional field.

  • We're also working to address the shortage of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists through an active partnership with the Fairfield University Nurse Anesthesia Program, the only program in Connecticut offering an MSN with a certificate in nurse anesthesia.

  • We also offer a nationally certified Clinical Pastoral Education Program that provides instruction in the hospital setting to community clergy and religious laypeople.
