Surgical Services Nursing at Bridgeport Hospital

Endoscopy Suite

As a part of Bridgeport Hospital’s Ambulatory Center, the Endoscopy Suite provides diagnostic and therapeutic treatment to both inpatients and outpatients of all ages from Monday-Friday, 6:45am-4:30pm (or until the last patient is discharged).

The Endoscopy Suite consists of 6 pre-procedure rooms, 6 endoscopy procedure rooms, 1 gastrointestinal motility room, a 10-bed admitting area, and an 8-bed recovery area.

Main Operating Room

Open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the Main Operating Room at Bridgeport Hospital is a 9-room suite comprised of 8 block-scheduled rooms and 1 room for trauma. We serve patients of all ages, and our procedures most frequently include endoscopic, trauma, orthopedic total joint, and cardiac open heart.

Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to enable patients to return to an optimal level of function, tending to their physical, psychosocial, cultural and spiritual needs. Completion of our 20-week Post-Graduate Perioperative Nursing Course is a prerequisite for entrance to operating room practice.

Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

The PACU at Bridgeport Hospital, which is comprised of a Pre-Op Holding Area and Post-Anesthesia Care Area, provides care to patients of all ages 24 hours a day, Monday-Friday. The PACU also operates on a 24-hour on-call basis on weekends.

Our 7-bed Holding Area is designed to prepare all patients who are to undergo invasive procedures in the Operating Room, as well as patients admitted for pre-operative hemo-dynamic catheter insertion. The pre-operative nursing assessment includes an evaluation of the patient’s physiological and psychological status, and our Holding Area resource nurses continue with the established pre-operative plan of care (revising as appropriate).

The Post-Anesthesia Care Area consists of 9 beds and 1 isolation room, all of which provide for intensive monitoring, observation and care to patients recovering from the effects of anesthesia, operative procedures and/or treatments. All post-op patients, with the exception of open-heart surgery patients admitted directly to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit, (hotlink: Bridgeport Hospital Nursing- Med/Surg subpage) are candidates for admission to the PACU. Our team administers nursing care until the effects and possible complications of anesthetic agents have been minimized.

Servings patients of all ages, the department includes 4 interviewing rooms, a 5-bed holding area, 7 operating rooms (2 of which are located in the Main Operating Room), a 10-bed PACU, and 7 lounge chairs for second-stage recovery. Our average utilization is 72%.
