Patients who present a medical diagnosis that is not cardiac in nature but who have a history of arrhythmia or coronary artery disease may be admitted to this unit. Our state-of-the-art treatment modalities include electrophysiology studies; electrical cardioversion; initiation and adjustment of pharmacologic regimens to maximize cardiac function, control arrythmia and minimize myocardial ischemic episodes; and implementation of cardiac rehab programs designed to assist patients and their families in understanding the disease process and lifestyle changes associated with coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. The Internal Medicine Unit also services the elective alcohol and drug detox protocol populations. Major SurgeryThe 27-bed Major Surgery Unit, which includes 4 flex beds and 13 dedicated telemetry beds, operates on a 24/7 basis and has an average daily census of 25 post-surgical patients. We administer to adult general surgery, vascular surgery, trauma, cardiothoracic surgery, and patients with multi-system involvement. The nursing staff of the state-of-the-art Norma F. Pfriem Cancer Center offers the experience and expertise to provide sophisticated, compassionate care to the oncology inpatient and outpatient populations. Our nurses develop a unique relationship with patients and their families as we provide care that spans all potential stages of the disease, from diagnosis through education, treatment and, when necessary, the end stage of life.
This Unit is composed of 19 inpatient beds and a 4-station outpatient service, which is flexible in both volume and hours of operation (offering services 7 days per week, 24 hours per day). All staff members receive training in the specialty of Oncology Nursing and Chemotherapy Administration, and are expected to maintain credential skills on an annual basis. We are committed to the ongoing education of our oncology nurses, and strongly encourage that each member of our team enjoy national recognition as an Oncology Certified Nurse. Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and UrologyOpen 24/7, this 30-bed Unit provides care to an average of 21 daily patients with ages ranging from late adolescence to geriatric. Our multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to enable patients to return to an optimal level of functioning by tending not only to their physical and medical needs, but also by addressing their psychosocial, spiritual and cultural needs as well. We specialize in caring for patients with diagnoses in the areas of Orthopedics, Neurosurgery and Urology, while also serving as an occasional overflow area for patients undergoing other general surgical procedures.
PsychiatryBridgeport Hospital operates two Psychiatric Units, a 20-bed adolescent unit treating patients between 13 and 18 years old and a 19-bed acute care unit serving both adults and adolescent patients. Both units utilize the primary care model of nursing, and involve the nursing process. The family is considered the unit of care in all applicable cases.Our predominant diagnoses include depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and our treatment modalities (of which patients often participate in several) include milieu therapy, individual psychotherapy, group therapy, recreational therapy, medication education, and group and individual family counseling. Pulmonary MedicineThe 29-bed adult Pulmonary Medicine Unit serves patients admitted for the diagnosis and treatment of acute pulmonary problems, infections and medical diseases. We also treat overflow CVA and General Medicine patients. Primary diagnoses include pneumonia, COPD, asthma, bronchitis, TB, and various other cardio-respiratory conditions.Rehabilitative MedicineBridgeport Hospital’s 19-bed acute inpatient Rehabilitation Unit provides comprehensive rehabilitative care to patients aged 16 and older. All patients must be medically stable and able to participate in a minimum of 3 hours of daily therapy. Resource Support Unit The Resource Support Unit at Bridgeport Hospital provides nurses with an exceptional opportunity to acquire a wide variety of clinical experience. Our RSU team consists of RNs, Patient Care Technicians and Business Clericals who have control hours and are scheduled around the clock to support our nursing units.
Our orientation programs are tailored to meet the individual needs of each nurse, and unit assignments are matched to the individual’s skill and training. Our staff receive assignments at the beginning of their shifts to cover sick calls and provide additional staff for census peaks. All RSU RNs are med/surg trained, and some are also trained in telemetry and/or critical care. Each member of our staff is encouraged to participate in specialty training in order to facilitate their own personal and professional goals. |
