Maternal Child Nursing at Bridgeport Hospital

Antenatal Testing Unit

The Antenatal Testing Unit at Bridgeport Hospital provides specialized services for women experiencing complicated and high-risk pregnancies. The unit is comprised of three ultrasound rooms and a 3-bed nursing area, and offers on-site offices for genetic counselors and perinatologists. Our RNs enjoy the special emphasis we give to health education on prevention and early detection of complications of pregnancy.

The ATU is fully accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, and our services include:

  • Preconception counseling
  • Basic and targeted obstetrical ultrasound
  • Prenatal diagnosis
  • Genetic counseling
  • Fetal assessment by biophysical profiles and non-stress testing
  • Prenatal and diabetic education
  • Pregnancy management prior to and during pregnancy

Labor & Delivery

Bridgeport Hospital’s 16-bed tertiary care Labor & Delivery Unit includes 9 birthing rooms, 5 triage/observation beds and obstetrical recovery beds, and 2 OR suites. All rooms operate on a 24/7 basis, and our average daily inpatient/outpatient volume is 16. We also average 6 deliveries per 24 hours.

Patients may be admitted to the L&D Unit antepartially or intrapartially, pre-term or full-term. Patients in this unit are within the childbearing years – from adolescence to mature adulthood – and may be admitted for diagnostic evaluation and treatment of pregnancy-related conditions, or for pregnancy superimposed on underlying maternal medical diseases.

Newborn Intensive Care Unit

Bridgeport Hospital’s newly renovated, 20-basinet Level III Newborn ICU serves critically ill newborns, particularly low-weight infants. The NBICU includes both an acute and sub-acute area, and our highly trained, multidisciplinary team includes four Neonatologists, interns, residents, RNs and APNs, and Physician Assistants.

We practice family-centered care to promote ongoing family education and participation during the infant’s stay. Special attention is also given to health teaching and role transition, to further promote the well being of the infant and family.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit

As the only Pediatric ICU in Fairfield County, CT, our 4-bed unit services acutely ill neonates, children and adolescents through age 21. Frequent medical diagnoses of our medical and surgical patients include:

  • Respiratory disorders
  • Trauma
  • Seizures
  • Diabetes
  • Immediate post-operative recovery

Pediatrics

The 22-bed Pediatric Unit at Bridgeport Hospital provides sophisticated, comprehensive services to infants, children and adolescents through age 21. Frequent medical diagnoses of our medical and surgical patients include:

  • Asthma and associated respiratory disorders
  • Seizures
  • Sepsis
  • Diabetes
  • Sickle cell disease

Women’s Care Center

The Women’s Care Center at Bridgeport Hospital is comprised of 36 beds with a 24-bassinet nursery. On this dynamic unit, RNs provide expert services to women of childbearing age following a vaginal delivery or cesarean birth while also providing well newborn care. We also offer Special Care Maternity beds, allocated to high-risk antepartum and post-partum women.

We take care to provide ongoing family educational programs during both antepartum and postpartum periods to both inpatients and outpatients, and pay special attention to health teaching and role transition issues to help promote the well being of the family unit.
