Emergency Department Nursing at Bridgeport Hospital
The Emergency Department at Bridgeport Hospital – a busy and acclaimed regional Trauma Center – treats more than 60,000 patients each year. Our adult ED is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to all patients (regardless of ability to pay), while our separately staffed Pediatric ED is open daily from 4pm to midnight. Specialty areas within the ED also include a separately staffed Urgent Care Center, a Chest Pain Center, and a Psychiatric Crisis Program open daily from 9am-9:30pm (staffed by psychiatric nurses).
As a whole, the Bridgeport Hospital ED offers 36 beds — including 3 behavioral modification rooms, 2 trauma/code rooms, 10 subacute bays, 8 holding bays and 5 observation beds. 16 of these beds are capable of providing telemetry.
We offer patient/nurse ratios of 1:1 to 1:5, depending on patient acuity, and of an average daily census of 170 patients, 18% require admission. Our most commonly treated illnesses include asthma, abdominal pain, chest pain, lacerations and fevers, and our renowned ED nursing team takes great pride in our ability to provide the finest quality care in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
