Critical Care Nursing at Bridgeport Hospital

Angioplasty Suite

With a capacity of 11 patients – with three 3-bed rooms and 1 2-bed room – the Angioplasty Suite at Bridgeport Hospital operates on a 24-hour basis on Monday through Friday. The Unit is also open until 3:30pm on Saturday (or until all patients are discharged or transferred to other nursing units).

The Angioplasty Suite nursing team serves the adult population with cardiac disease requiring invasive cardiac interventional procedures, including percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, intracoronary stent placement, peripheral placement procedures, and rotoblator. The unit also serves adult patients requiring such electrophysiology procedures as pacemaker implants, ICD implants, EPS studies, NIEPS studies and redioblations. Patients in this unit may also receive medical intervention, surgical intervention and cardiovascular evaluation and treatment.

The most frequent medical diagnoses of patients on this unit include acute MI, unstable angina, and cardiac arrhythmias. In addition, patients with coronary artery disease requiring intravenous nitroglycerin or intravenous inotropic therapy – or who are experiencing cardiac rhythm disturbances – may also be cared for in the Angioplasty Suite.

Burn Center

Bridgeport Hospital is home to the only designated Burn Center in the state of Connecticut. Our 10-bed unit is comprised of 4 intensive care units and 6 non-acute surgical beds. Our acute care beds are available for major burn patients who require fluid resuscitation/cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring, as well as ventilatory support while they remain in an emergent and post-operative phase of burn injury and/or hydrotherapy for patients with less than a 20% BSA skin loss.

Nurses on the Burn Team care for both pediatric and adult patients with major and minor burn injuries, Steven’s Johnson Syndrome, electrical injuries, and excess skin loss for any reason. We utilize a multidisciplinary approach to care that balances the provision of comfort and prevention of infection with the promotion of restoration to the highest productive capacity of each individual — or when necessary, assistance with a dignified death.

Our Scar Management Team manages the rehabilitative phase of burn care, assisting patients in adjusting to the physical, psychological and/or social components of their injuries as they return to society. Combining pressure garments with intense Social Service intervention, our team works to assist patients with their return to daily living.

Medical/Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

The Medical/Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Bridgeport Hospital is a 16-bed mixed medical and cardiac unit serving the needs of critically ill adult patients on a 24/7 basis. Maintaining 80% occupancy, our nursing teams serve the adult population with respiratory, cardiac, neurologic, gastrointestinal, hematological and psychological disorders. Our critically ill patients may receive medical intervention, surgical intervention and/or cardiovascular evaluation treatment. Common diagnoses include:

  • Acute MI
  • Unstable angina
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Asthma/chronic obstructive pulmonary disease requiring ventilatory support
  • Respiratory failure
  • Shock
  • Sepsis
  • Endocrine emergencies

We also provide services for patients undergoing procedures requiring increased observation (such as PTCA or catheterization); those with cardiac rhythm disturbances or unstable coronary artery disease requiring intravenous nitroglycerin; patients requiring hemodynamic monitoring or pharmacological support; and patients requiring the Intra Aortic Balloon Pump.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit

Operating on a 24/7 basis, the Bridgeport Hospital Surgical Intensive Care Unit provides care for immediate post-operative major surgical patients who may be hemodynamically unstable and require invasive monitoring and intravenous pharmaceutical vasoactive or isotropic agents. We also provide ventilatory support and intensive, complex nursing interventions.

The SICU patient population includes cardiac surgical, neurosurgical, trauma, vascular and general surgical patients, and we also serve as an overflow area for the Medical/Cardiac ICU. All critically ill trauma patients admitted to the SICU are cared for by trained trauma staff. Our nursing team prides itself not only on compassion and technical expertise but also on the individualization of care, with special consideration given to cultural and religious beliefs.
